Thanksgiving is done, but we still have a few other holidays in sight. Besides friends and family, nothing is more warming during the winter freeze than peppermint schnapps, hot cider or eggnog with a little bourbon. However, if you decide to get your jolly “buzz” on during this holiday season, please be careful. According to the Pioneer Press, over 300 Minnesota law enforcement agencies will be working long hours to crack down on drunk driving during the next few weeks.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety explains that over the past four years, drunk driving fatalities have been relatively high around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. In fact, death rates have topped some other major U.S. holidays. With this in mind, Minnesota is backing a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” patrolling campaign, which aims to reduce the number of drunk-driving-related car accidents over the colder months.
The patrolling scheme
The initiative, which involves extra DWI enforcement, will run on all weekends through January 2, 2016. The statewide patrol includes assistance from sheriffs’ offices, police departments and the State Patrol. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is providing relevant funding for the program.
As temperatures continue to plummet in Minnesota, it is important to stay warm and cozy. We just ask that you be extra careful for the next month. While a little tasty beverage might keep you cheerful and warm over the holiday season, please refrain from getting behind the wheel.
